Type 8D ECU location?

Ti is correct. All B5 chassis A4s and S4s are the same.

Pull the weatherstripping back (towards the front of the car), pop the
silver clip with a screwdriver (at far driver's side) and the rain shield
slides right out. 7mm screws hold the cover on the ECU box. The rear screw
requires a short extension and short 7mm socket to remove (slightly tricky,
but not bad). Once inside, inspect for water. Good time to clean out any
debris from the rain gutter, too.

If you need to remove the ECU, the hold down pops with a slotted screwdriver
(as a lever) by pushing down and rotating slightly. Very similar to some
computer ECU fan clips, if you're familiar with computers.
The ECU has two connectors which pop and rotate by hand. ECU is opened with
security torx, if I recall correctly.

I don't see many automatics, but it's possible the TCU could've gotten
wet.... that and the brake switch, which is a required signal to start an
automatic. Clutch switch if manual.
