Replacement boot doesn't leak,   but car still runs rough.   I will try a distributor and coil next.

Thanks to all and Tony for steering me towards vacuum leaks..
With my stethescope I found at least one serious leak, the "igloo" rubber boot on top of the air flow plate. Squeezing around the bottom increased the leak.  Upon removal it not only had rot cracks but showed signs of being improperly installed.(Maybe by me some years ago).
Didn't get to install a replacement yet to test but will update results ASAP.

PS.  Never throw anything away!  Looking through my vast pile of parts I found a nice boot, cleaned it all up...it was the wrong one, for an earlier turbo.   So back to the pile and found the right one.  From a car with less miles and hopefully less heat cycles, it's still nice and pliable.
