Ironically - I recently did the almost opposite. I used some genuine Audi
alternator brushes I bought many years ago, but never used, to fix my cheap
Harbor Freight electric impact wrench. Almost no HW stores carry brushes
anymore....
In any case, if they are still available, the Bosch/Audi part
makes replacement much easier because they have a solid wire soldered to the
end of the flex wire. That solid wire makes pulling the lead through the
frame of the VR easy.
Try a search on "Bosch Alternator Brush Set: in ebay.....

Excellent call on the ebay brushes. I should have thought of that myself.
Too bad I pulled the trigger on a new VR through AutohausAZ.com.
Their Bosch unit was about $25 less than the generics a could get locally.
I'm probably better off not driving my Audi for a couple of days until the new VR arrives (still charging as of this morning), but with AAA membership, local trips can be made with the car without too much trouble.
It gives me an excuse to drive the convertible I bought as a fixerup -- which has become a must-seller.
I will probably buy a set of the alternator brushes to keep on hand.
