VW Diesel Transplant?

It can be done. I'm looking at doing this in my 90Q which is currently a
20v I5. The bell housings on almost all vw/audi engines are the same,
except vr6's and some of the v8's AFAIK, and other vr variants. The alh/BEW
(01-06 tdi engines) will bolt up to any 016 or 10E/A! you use a A4 clutch
or Coupe GT for 016 and the matching flywheel. Mounts might be tricky, but
can be done, I think t44's did come with 4 bangers in europe in FWD.

Now the 4 cylinder gives you tons of room up front for intercooler and
such. You will need a different turbo then the transverse setup used, but
8v VW manifolds can be had in both versions. If your using the stock ECU
you will need to match the turbo size or get it tuned for the turbo you
want. The nice thing about the newer engines is they are much nicer for
everyday driving then the older motors. They run smoother and use less
fuel. Gearing the thing to cruise at freeway speeds will need to be done
with the correct transmission. A 6-speed would be ideal, but it is a little
spending needing new mounts, shifter, trans, and axles. a diesel 016 can be
found, but might be a little more then most would want. a 5k box with 3.8
R&P isn't a horrible setup, but is a little short.

For a perspective a ALH code 8v TDI with injectors, tuning, IC upgrade, and
2260 turbo from a 3.0L TDI can make 200+WHP in a MK4 VW golf/jetta. That
would be a potent little motor for a t44, yet still get mid to upper 40's on
the highway.
