No, you can't. The voltage regulator in an alternator is not a plain
voltage regulator. It regulates output voltage by adjusting the
current flowing through the rotor windings. As a result, there is
almost no power dissipation in the regulator, so it can handle output
currents at several tens of amps.
A TO-220 based voltage regulator would cook in an instant.
