Antenna question for the audiphiles out there.

Here's a question that has come up on my car, hoping for some wisdom from
the collective list.
I recently bought a 89 100 Avant 5-speed that has the roof mounted antenna
from the factory. This car also has the complete factory stereo still in
place, complete with blown speakers. It is not the Bose system, just the
standard one. I have some replacement speakers, those will go in shortly.
When I got the car, the reception left something to be desired, to say the
least. The mast was in pretty bad shape, so I replaced it. Now, it is
better. That said, it's still not that great, compared to my 4000Q, much
less a lot of other cars. I have to remove the headliner to recover it, so
while it is out, my son had a suggestion. He said, why not put one of those
newer shark fin antennas on it, it might help out with the reception. So, my
question is, will it (I'm assuming they have an amplifier and impedence
matching built into them) and if so, can I buy any of them. IOW, does the
brand matter, and what one should I get. And, what should I expect to pay
for a decent one if this is a good alternative. If not, I guess I'll just
search out a decent antenna amplifier to add in line.
I certainly would like the look of the newer antenna on my car. I'll of
course paint it to match my car, which is in very nice condition and Lago
Blue.
