Funny, I thought my S4 twin turbo, modded with a chip, diverter valves, big exhaust, and a tracksport suspension was a fast car. I recently have been fortunate enough to get some extended seat time in a bone stock '99 Carrera. Wow, sure glad I never raced one of those for titles! The Porsche is probably down 30 hp over the Audi, but what a difference 800 pounds makes! It's quicker, and more importantly, easier to drive fast (but harder to drive slow).
Curiously, the 911 old guard look at the "new" liquid cooled 911s with a scowl, but I find it much improved over the '70s and '80s 911s I've driven. Other than missing the beastly howl of the air cooled 911, the 962 is better in every way I can see. I'm glad the aficionados hate them. A '99 can be had for thousands less than an air cooled 911.
