VW 2.0T question

I'm going to start with Wow! I didn't think my question would spark such  
interest and my head is spinning from oil talk.

Unfortunately, one of my friends made a bad decision when purchased his  
Passat. It seemed a little "worn" for a 60k mile car, so it wasn't probably  
the best example.  Nevertheless, the mechanic we both use still pushes us to  
change oil everything 3000 miles. That way even when we're late...it's still  
under 5000 miles. But, none of this matters for him anymore.  He traded his  
Passat for a new Honda Accord yesterday. It pained him to get a Honda (he's  
got a '74 Westie also), but he's a realtor and something reliable.  He told  
me his topped off his oil Monday and Thursday it wasn't registering on the  
dipstick.  Time to trade.

I haven't had time to discuss all the info with my other friend.  I think he  
bought his Passat from a Audi/VW dealer...but that doesn't mean it was taken  
car of. 

Thank you all for the info. Once again the knowledge and support of this  
list amazes me!

Yes and no.  I've tried awfully hard to make the point that we must have to  
look at the environment oil will be used in, and compare it to its specs.

The corollary pf this is: " there are not good and bad oils, only different  
oils for different applications".

You can change your oil every 1000 miles, but if it will go into a 400 deg  
environment, and has a 275 deg flash point, its gonna fail.

Of course its not that simple, oil loses grade with time sue to shear and  
dilution, etc - but the principle remains.

For daily drivers - yes. For 2.0 turbos ( the subject of this thread after  
all) - i don't completely agree, although the idea is still useful.
