VVT = Variable valve timing. It is operated by hydraulic solenoids and oil pressure fed actuators.
I must apologize, that particular engine actually has a timing chain, not a belt. Given VAG's issues with the 4.2l v8 of similar vintage it's fair to say that there is a real possibility that a timing chain tensioner or guide rail has broken. Does it make any rattling noises at startup?
