We just had this issue with our A4. V6.....187000 miles.
The timing belt drives the exhaust cam and there is a chain from the
exhaust cam to the intake cam. The hydraulic mechanism allows for very
small change in valve timing of intake vs exhaust valves. Very slick
design. Ours had the plastic pads worn through and the chain was cutting
into the actuator...
We couldn't afford a new actuator and the labor ($2000) so the mechanic
reluctantly replaced the plastic parts.....with no guarantee........he was
right!
Two days later the check engine light came on and we parked it.....
If you lose that chain you lose the engine.
Considering my options......
