I have a 1986 5000CS sedan with 318,000km, and it is worth it. The car is
stolid, I have replaced all what you have listed. It is worth it. I don't
regret it. Since the remaining life is high. I had the car repainted 7 years
ago. Did the hood struts last year. Changed the rack November 2011. Make
sure you have mechanic order the rack if you let mechanic install rack, in
case it is defective, mech and suppler take responsibility. Roof liner had
replaced 7 years ago, though depends what you use car for. You may grind
rust off yourself and prime yourself. Even paint yourself depending how
extensive painting it needs.

Subject: 5000CS dilemma
So I have a decision to make regarding our old, reliable 1987 5000CS Avant.
This car still runs fairly well. We have used it as a snow car for the
last 5 or 6 years, and has performed wonderfully. Problem is that the
car needs some minor repairs, and it is at the stage where one has to
wonder if it is worth it any longer to put money into a car this old.
The car needs a new steering rack (leaks fluid). Otherwise mechanically
it is fairly sound. On the cosmetic side, it has peeling paint,
headliner is starting to fall down, and the leather seats have tears in
them and it could use some new rear hatch lift cylinders.
Problem is, this car is probably worth more at the crusher than sold as
a running car even with the repairs; even though it has many years of
life left to it, in the right hands. Even with me doing the labor, parts
alone to fix the current problems would likely come to >50% of the
crusher value. Is it worth it??? I figured that if any group of people
would say keep and fix the car, it would be this list.
Thoughts?
