Looking for a New Ride

I thought I wanted my next purchase to be a TDI too, because I want ultimate gas mileage.  I was looking for a '95 Passat wagon.  The more research I did, the less they looked desirable.  After talking to several non-selling owners, they don't get over 40mpg, unless coasting downhill.  Mid 30s in real life.  The have all of the VAG maintenance and reliability headaches.  Cars with 200,000 miles are still commanding over $10,000.  If you live in the north, as I do, you have cold start issues.  Figure in the price of diesel, and there is no economy.  JMHO.
