We bought a family hauler over the summer and one of the reasons we
went with the Mazda CX-9 is its automatic transmission. It also
downshifts when slowing down, going downhill, etc. Unlike some
competitors, it also downshifts quickly when it should — a lot of cars
now are so reluctant to downshift because of fuel economy concerns
it's maddening to drive them. My wife really liked the GMC Acadia as
well but its shifting was a deal-breaker — the thing would lose 4 or 5
mph on cruise control on the highway before it would downshift, for
example. It also doesn't hurt that the CX-9 has a big display in the
instrument cluster telling you what gear it's in. :-)
