Sorry for creating a Mazda-jack. :-) We've had three (the CX-9 and a V6/manual transmission Mazda 6 currently, and we had a Miata for many years) and are big fans, obviously. They're not nearly as nice as the Audis and VWs we've had, but they're a lot easier on the checkbook. I really like that they have a philosophy and stick with it, too; our CX-9, for example, gets a little worse mileage than its competitiors, but it's well worth it for being so much better to drive.

The cx9 is a cool car. Although its not one of their sports cars, all of their cars in the last decade have taken on their philosophy of a car not worth driving isn't worth building. I really love my mx5, and mazda 3s are even quite fun, although they don't lie about being an economy car.

Its a brand I really enjoy, like audi's or older bmws. They build some very fun cars that don't bore you to death. My 09 corolla is the most miserable pos I have ever owned and I can't practically give it away, it seems.

We bought a family hauler over the summer and one of the reasons we went with the Mazda CX-9 is its automatic transmission. It also downshifts when slowing down, going downhill, etc. Unlike some competitors, it also downshifts quickly when it should — a lot of cars now are so reluctant to downshift because of fuel economy concerns it's maddening to drive them. My wife really liked the GMC Acadia as well but its shifting was a deal-breaker — the thing would lose 4 or 5 mph on cruise control on the highway before it would downshift, for example. It also doesn't hurt that the CX-9 has a big display in the instrument cluster telling you what gear it's in. :-)

Modern A/T's are pretty amazing things. Our 2007 Odyssey has a 5-speed auto that actually downshifts as you slow down (although no
rev-matching ;-). Actually threw me for a loop the first time I slowed down to turn into the driveway as it downshifted and the revs increased,
causing me to enter a little faster than I had planned!

I think the perceived torque that Mohammed refers to is the result of the 8-speed auto transmission.
 ?
I drove that box in a Chrysler 300 V6, a BMW X1 2.0t, in a Touareg diesel and numerous others German machines. Each time, I was amazed by its qualities : smooth and fast gearchanges, starts in 2nd normally but uses 1st if the throttle is floored, quick multiple downshifts, efficient on the highway, etc.
 ?
I won?t buy one, Honey and I are MT people, but it is a gem of transmission.

An 8-speed transmission?? Wow, was not aware of that.

Returned the loaner and got back the A4.? Definitely notice the lack of smoothness and NVH in the A4 as compared to the A6.? They've done a good job on the A6.? Will have to test drive a newer A4 to see how it matches up with an A6.

Thanks for the education and insights to all.
