The C4s are quite stout and easy to maintain IMO.
While many newer Audis did indeed have auto tranny issues, the C4 does
not have enough torque to hurt itself. Do a normal service (drain,
clean, filter, refill) every 50k (miles) and all should be well.
As to your brakes, your description confuses me. Sounds like the pads
don't extend to the edge an a ring is developing.Normal.
I have also noticed that in many designs the outer, say 1/2-3/4 " of
rotor surface gets less pressure. I don't know why except for lack of
rigidity. And yes, i too would expect it to bend out at the bottom, not
the top :-) But i've seen it before with no lack of performance or life.
