They are probably speed nuts. It slides onto the sheet metal like a clip.

The license plates on the rear of my Audi are held in place by screws, which
screw into some kind of a threaded clip/retainer that is mounted behind the
moulded plastic where the plate attaches.  I need to replace them.
I asked at the local shop that sells specialty parte for European cars, but
they didn't carry it.  There's a variety of license plate holders that you
can buy at a more general place like Napa, but none are quite the same.
Thus I'm thinking pick these clips up at a hardware store.  Is there any
name for this type of clip?  Ie its not just a nut, it's a nut that stays in
place behind the plastic and doesn't turn when you tighten the license plate
screws.
