Or unlucky? You are betting that your car will break down. it's just like life insurance you bet you will die before the premium total exceeds the payout.
The old Rusty Jones was one of the worst scams. The maximum benefit was how much you initially paid for a premium! I worked a a car dealership back then.

As a many year subscriber to Consumer Reports, I can say that "extended 
service contracts" are regarded as "profit centers". Of course, if you are 
the 1 in 10 that actually scores on the contract you feel pretty good about 
it. So, the question "Well punk, do you feel lucky?"
