The good news is it doesn't appear to be vandalism. There are no doors on  
the scuttle, so the underside of the barn gets some sun. The tail end is, at 
 times, in the sun. There are no holes in the windows, the glass is simply  
crystallized. So, I suspect a  heat/cooling phenomenon. Seen that before  
around here. Worse news. It is under the barn because the gas tank rusted up 
and  I jacked it up there to replace the tank. After purchase of a new tank, 
and  removal of the old, I found there is an outstanding recall from 1988. 
If I had  driven it to the VW dealer, they would have replaced the tank.
