Water puddle is OK, that's condensation. And all exhaust are somewhat black and soothy, from the combustion process comes a lot of
unburned carbon. No worry.
It smells gas ? If REAL gas odor, you have a leak somewhere. Find it.
If it's gas-like odor, then my guess would be a problem with one cylinder spark : spark plug, high tension lead wire, cracked
distributor cap, broken rotor, etc.
Does the engine sounds or feel different ? Is it difficult to climb the rev ? Does it wants to "clear its throat" when you gently
rev it ?

Thank you to all who responded. I think I can rule out something dead. It doesn't have that kind of smell and only smells when
running.
I put my finger in the exhaust and it came out black. Is that necessarily evidence of the problem or do they run richer in winter?
Right now, I'm sitting in the car warming it up and to me, it smells like gas. I drove a short distance, left it parked running for
a few minutes. It didn't smell as bad as other times, but I noticed a small puddle of water? on the ground under the tailpipe.
In general, it wasn't really bad today. Definitely not a rotten egg smell.
I will continue to look into some of your suggestions. Unfortunately, the weather on the east coast is not cooperating with outdoor
activities.
