Clutch Problem

On the way to work this morning the clutch pedal
did not return to the top position after a shift.
I could still shift gears, but the travel was
quite limited and the pedal stayed near the floor.
I was able to return it to the normal position by
pulling up with my foot. After that it worked
normally for a short while, but I had to repeat
the procedure several times on a 30 minute drive.
Once I parked the car I was not able to reproduce
the symptoms with the car stationary in neutral.
My first thought was that a linkage had come
loose. Hydraulic fluid level is normal.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to what to look
first. Thanks.
