Could be the master or the slave cylinder. It's been a while, but when
mine went (pedal doing the same, then on the floor one day) I replaced
the master first, things got a little better (pedal could be pumped
solid) and had to replace the slave too. IIRC it was a bit of a PITA to
get the rusty roller pin out to change it. This was on an early 5
cylinder, so yours maybe different.
If you search the Q archives, I'm sure you'll find plenty of info, as it
was a common theme back when this list had real traffic.
