The timing belt is a combination of rubber and belt. The belt might be
nylon, or some other fiber that adds strength under the rubber casing. The
belt isn't going to come apart just because of the aged rubber. On the other
hand, when it starts shedding teeth it is probably too late.
Just looking at the whole picture.
