My 2.0 Golf ABA can blow one of those seals in 12 months. I buy several at a time and when doing an oil change if there is any sign of a leak I change it. (Not a piece of cake in the Golf but you get better at it each time). I find the old seal to be hard as a rock and cracked, it just seams like it is not made out of the correct material to withstand the heat. If you have ever had one blow, it's scary just how fast the oil comes out. My wife walked in the house one day and said she noticed a big dark line of something when she was backing up the car, shut the motor off and fetched me. That was my first introduction to the blown oil cooler seal, and she got a big hug and kiss.
Now my '98 2.8 AHA with 200K miles on it still has the original seal without a sign of any leaking (about the only place on that engine that doesn't leak oil) and when that same wife called me and said that there was a good sized puddle of oil under her car, I asked when she first noticed it and she said after she didn't see a speed bump and took a look. I have a new oil pan all wrapped up for Christmas, and I am sure she will never guess what is in the package. (JB Weld has worked great for a month already, only 3 1/2 weeks left till Christmas.
