Wow!  I was just talking to a friend about this, citing it as a problem 
you would NEVER find in any book and why the web has been such an 
important addition to my toolbox.  It's the master cylinder.  It's 
ALWAYS the master cylinder.  If you don't believe this and you want to 
test further, wait until it happens again and dump a 5 gallon bucket of 
ice water over it (just plain cold water will probably work).  The 
brakes will release.
