Yes, usually 2. Never had to replace any.
U-joint at bottom of steering column is unlikely culprit or candidate for
lubing for this noise. It might create some play, if worn and lubing won't
hurt but it won't rectify the issue.
Steering column might be rubbing in something. Is the noise heard outside -
suspension bits?

Patient: 2001.5 Audi S4 biturbo, 135K mi.
Symptom: Turning the steering wheel clockwise produces a groan/squeal
noise, it sounds like something needs lubrication. No noise when
turning counter-clockwise.
