Alternator differences

Thanks guys. The original alternator on the van lasted 20 years, all
I had to do was periodically install new brushes. About three years
ago I had to replace it because the rebuild shop wouldn't work on it -
too rusted. So, the replacement was still shiny when it failed. I
took it to the rebuild shop and swapped for a new one - all is good
for know. I wonder how long this one is going to last - the van is
slowly losing its German origins and becoming Chinese!
What was puzzling for me were the extra connectors on the newer
alternators. It turns out L goes to the indicator lamp, DFM goes to
the ECU. Since the van does not support a ECU connection, it can be
left out. So, to answer my original question, the newer Jetta
alternator should fit the van.
In the process of researching this, I came across a reference table
entitled "Alternator Voltage Regulator Terminal Designations" which
lists equivalents from different manufacturers. For example, what
Bosch and Valeo mark as DFM, is FR at Delco and Ford. If anyone is
interested, I can email you the table directly.
Thanks.
Radek.
