I'd say his hypothesis of an electrical issue could be accurate and easily checked with a VCDS. However, oil level is critical on these so the leaks could very well be causing the level go low and cause issues.
Actually... Are you saying the shift lever itself is physically difficult to move or that gear engagements are harsh?
