Mechanics don't usually "fix" transmissions. Transmission shops do.
Mechanics may try to buy you some time with the magic additive.
The transmission shop around here charges fairly flat rates to rebuild
automatics. I'm sure brands and models vary, but my truck was a bit
over a grand.
My last truck was a bit under a grand.
My '83 5kt (probably same transmission as yours) was about 400, but that
was over 20 years ago.
I'd call a transmission shop and see if they will quote the rebuild for you.
