Hi there. It's a well known failure. Fortunately it sounds like yours has failed in the best way as quite often the get stiffer and stiffer and break the left hinge. The hissing is air from a hole in the unit which gives the damper action.

It's a small damper unit. It's a very cheap part from Audi. Remove the plastic cover on the end of the dashboard ...it's just pop off with a plastic trim tool. and you will see the other end of the cylinder on a pivot. It's held with a small metal clip, push that off and replace the part, the other end goes to the glovebox lid near the hinge. You should then have the smooth action again.
