Hi Paul,
Thanks. I have done some work since my post and determined that
the dashpot is broken, so I am going to replace it.
Btw, what you described is for a B6 model. On the B5 like mine,
the dashpot is located on the other (center console) side of the
glove box. The dashpot part number is 8D1880324A, but it's NLA.
The B6 models use 8E1880324A which looks very similar to the B5's,
except it has an electrical connector on it for the glove box
light. I ordered the B6 dashpot and it's on its way to me.
I hope it fits and works properly.
