CV joints basics, NAC, but VAG

Re-booting a CV axle (driver's side) and found a slight play between the CV
inner race and the shaft. Suspected OEM, been there 24 years, dry and
slight surface rust on shaft. Put grease on, the play was reduced and is
about the same on both inner and outer CV joints - minor. Must I replace
the joints? Considerations are:
1. If the play is in the shaft, a new CV joint might not make a difference.
2. I have another used CV joint, whose inner race fits tighter onto the
shaft, but the joint itself seems looser, since the balls are easy to come
out, not easy to put in, though. Mixing parts from the 2 joints? Never saw
 such recommendation.
3. I'm very suspicious of whole axles sold as I have 1 on the pass. side,
been there maybe 3-4 years and both boots leak profusely, though look whole
- must re-boot this axle, too.

Any advice very much appreciated.

If it matters, this is a ? re: '92 Eurovan, 240+K km
