When that happened to me the pedal became hard and wouldn't go down very
far.

Under hood heat buildup caused MC warpage that made brakes remain engaged
after the pedal was released, especially in 200q20v models. I don't recall
that making the pedal hard. Does the CQ have a "bomb"? Failing accumulator
can cause a stiff brake pedal.
