I love my Audi TT I have a 2001 TT roadster. I love it with even just the 5 speed with FWD and 1.8l turbo AWP code engine which is also used on GTIs. You will need to change the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, damper, roller and thermostat if over 60,000 miles of service miles on them to be really safe.
There are a few TT unique problems that are expensive to repair like the I/P cluster.
But there are many of the car's functional parts that are common with a MK4 GTI. I have a couple of those too.
