quattro Digest, Vol 169, Issue 4

Parted with my Typ 89 many moons ago, so going from memory.
BTDT. Usually this is caused by a faulty, often leaking,
multi-(mal)function sensor. It's located on the driver's side of the engine
block, closer to the front of the car, around and below # 2 cylinder spark
plug. IIRC, it has a 4-pin plug below - it gets filled with coolant, if
sensor is leaking. I replaced mine and all was well. It needs a large size
- 24 or 27 mm or a pipe wrench - to be unscrewed.
