I have a 1993 S4, and this is my first post, yet I have followed the
list for quite some time.  Recently noticed a weird noise coming from
the transmission when downshifting (typically from fourth to third at
about 3200 RPM).  It is not a synchro, as it is fully sunk into third,
yet when I let out the clutch, I occasionally hear a short, high pitched
whining sound (sounds somewhat like a synchro, and only lasts about ½ a
second).

I have read multiple posts about the transmission problems with this
car, yet this does not sound like the typical problems associated with
it (i.e, growling under load in first and second gear).  This car had
the tranny replaced by the dealer at 39,917 miles.  This was replaced on
1/17/96, and was replaced with the part number 01E-300-042-BX.

Two questions:  Does this sound like the typical S4 transmission
problem?  Was not the manufacturing problem solved by 1996 (or was this
part number an inventoried transmission with the same defect)?
