I just had the same thing happen.  Lost #1 cyl.  Found out that it was the
coil.  Replaced it and the car still missed.  Found out that a bad coil will
sometimes short the ignition control unit.  Replaced that unit and all is
fine.  Coil ran about $90 but the ignition control unit was expensive at
about $270.

To any one interested,
The Audi control unit has a Bosch # 0227100209.  I bought one this
week from my local parts source.  He ordered it directly from Bosch.
I paid $156 plus $6 postage.  The receipt indicates a Bosch list
price of $278.  This particular store gives me the mechanic's
discount. A dozen or so Audis in the last three decades earned me
this status.
