[s-cars] Fuel Tank woes or "Duh?"

Hi Y'all,
My urS6's fuel gauge has been acting flaky with readout dropping almost
instantly to completely empty when there is till nearly a quarter tank of
fuel left. I figure the problem was a non-functioning level
sensor. Anyway, I am in the midst of replacing the fuel level sensor.
I disconnected the outside hoses and wiring connectors, etc., removed the
retaining ring, (it comes off fairly easily with a few gentle taps),
disconnected the inner hoses, wiring, etc., removed the old sensor and the
sealing ring and then replaced it with the new one. Like it says so
frequently in the Bentley manuals, reassembly is the reverse of
disassembly. All the hose connections and wiring is reconnected and tight.
Everything went quite smoothly, almost like I had a clue as to what I was
doing until - it came time to tighten the retaining ring back into
place. Any suggestions as to how I can get that retaining ring back where
it belongs? Lacking the proper Audi-specified tool, of course.
Kinda reminds me of the reporter's famous question: "Other than that, Mrs.
Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"
Bob
