[s-cars] Re: [Audi5zylinderturbotechnik] Possible ignition problem

Rod,

I read the other responses off the s-car list and they all sound reasonable.
My 95.5 S6 developed a symptom very similar to what you describe about a year
ago. It only occurred at light to trailing throttle or deceleration. I
forget the code but the ECU complained about an intermittent "control limit
not reached." I suspected the O2 sensor even though it was only a year old
because I replaced it with the cheap "generic" Bosch part instead of the
expensive Audi part with the correct connectors. Sometimes the check engine
would come on but it went back off the instant I gave the car some more
throttle. The Bentley suggests all the regular suspects for the code but also
includes the PSO as possible culprit.

Anyway, just a week ago my car suddenly developed an intermittent consistent
miss. That sounds like an oxymoron but sometimes the car ran fine -- full
boost, idle, anything. Other times it missed at idle, full boost, anything.
I replaced the PSO for the affected cylinder and not only did the miss go
away, so did the mysterious light throttle stumble. Coincidence? Time will
tell. I can tell you that the car runs better than before and the idle is
better (less hunting) with the new PSO. The difference in feel leads me to
suspect the PSO is more than just a simple driver stage for the ignition coils
or that they can "fade away" in addition to just out right failing.

HTH,

Russ
