Bob if it makes you feel any better, I once replaced a clutch, pressure
plate/ transmission (cost more than the car was worth) in my 84 GTI to get
rid of this really strange noise/vibration. All that time and effort and
money did not solve the problem, but a little moly grease applied to a dried
out CV joint did.
