I forget the specifics, but one of the purposes of dual-mass flywheels
is to attenuate transmission noise. Audi (& Porsche) did something
different with their trannys at a certain date, and one of the results
was the need for a DM FW on all subsequent models. I just forget what
the hell it was that they did.

This is in addition to other reasons for going with the DM unit.

There was a terrific article that dissected the DM unit and spoke to the
reasons for its existence in the Brit mag 911 World several years ago.
