just did this conversion yesterday to the connector.  I use crimps on the
splice, then fold over military spec (that's fold a loop on one side, lay the
conneciton down against one of the input wires, zip tie or tape).  To resist
corrosion, I slurp a big dose of silicone (Goop is my fave it dries the
fastes), done.  Just make sure you use as much of the heat tubing as you can,
brake heat can melt the wire casing.
