[s-cars] Dust sleeve removal?

David:

Whether they are NEEDED or not, I dunno.

Available? Definitely -- the stock boots fit w/o any problem -- BTDT many
times. The boots do not fit on the shaft, they fit on the strut housing, so
shaft thickness doesn't matter (at least that's what my wife says!).

Forget mounting the dust boots on Bilsteins. First, the shaft is MUCH
thicker than stock, so OEM boots won't fit. Second, the design of Bilsteins
is basically an upside down shock so the real shaft is already sealed inside
the shock body. No boot needed or available. I even contacted Bilstein and
they said there was no boots available from them that would fit. They also
said, because of the thickness of the "shaft" the only boots that would fit,
would end up hitting the springs and self destructing in a short period of
time. Bottom line, there are no boots needed or available for Bilsteins.
Koni and Boge do require boots.

I'd install the dust boots if you can, Aaron. I got the same story from the
dealer years ago when they forgot to replace the boot on a front shock on my
'86 5ktq. They said it wasn't needed, couldn't be done without stripping the
strut, yada, yada, yada. Having the shaft run up and down in a load of sand
didn't seem to be a good way of ensuring the longevity of shaft or seal, so
I installed the boot myself, with the strut in the car. Will the stock boots
fit onto the Bilsteins?

I had my local tire shop install my Bilsteins and they left the boots off.
They said they are not really needed as the shock shafts are plated etc
etc... I think this is bull but they are offering a lifetime warrantee on
the shocks so?.... I'm wondering if I should install some new boots
regardless - It would be nice for the next owner who wont have the
warrantee. Any thoughts? Thanks Aaron
