[s-cars] Badly cracked rack mount

Hi Mike;

The rack mount was re-designed on the '97 S6. Apparently Audi also changed
the design of the front strut towers as well. You might ask some of the '97
owners for info - I've never seen the re-designed mounts and would also be
interested in what was done.

Subject:	[s-cars] Badly cracked rack mount

Yes, the dreaded driver's side inner fender well crack has occurred on my
'95
S6. I called both a dealer and Audi customer service to see if this was
covered. Apparently not. The 10 year body warrantee only covers exterior
body panels, not chassis components (which is what they consider the inner
fender well). Did anyone get a different story on this?

Greg at Autofirme said he never saw one like this. There are missing
pieces
on the inner fender well where the metal just apparently dropped off after
cracking. The fix is to remove the rack, remove the spot welded stiffener
on fender well, add a filler piece and put it all back together. Any
BTDT's??? I remember seeing something about Audi changing the mount design
on the 95.5's and later. Comments??

As it turns out, Greg's bother who runs the body shop will need to do this
and can't get to it until the week of 7/29. I've got two trips to Newark
Airport ahead of me so I'll not be cranking real hard into turns until
then.

Greg also mentioned he had had custom springs made up that drop the car
only
about an inch, while greatly improving the handling. Anyone on the list in
the NY/CT area have tried them out?

Tnx,

Mike Bess
