Greetings all,
I am cross posting here to answer two questions in one shot (S post
regarding the "best" brake kit, again, and BIRA re: 996tt caliper pad
options).
First off, having recently toyed with the idea of running 996 Gt2 6
Piston calipers over Porsche Motorsport 993 Gt2 Endurance 380x32 rotors,
I can happily say that Bira 6x or a 993tt setup using the RS2 bracket
and custom hat (both of these kits offer the same rotor & caliper
offfset) is the best way to go for the UrS that spends any time as a
street car. .
Thanks to the offsets S6x will fit many wheels that would othewise not
fit due to lateral clearance. As a plus, S6x clears UrS4 16" wheels w/o
the need for spacers. I am currently looking for a narrower 16 that will
fit, but have been unlucky (including the 16" S4tt winter wheel).
So, not only can you fit a 16" wheel over these kits, but they offer
stellar performance that has been documented on both of these forums. As
a recap, I have tracked mine many times already using both stock 996tt
pads (light track events) and Pagid Orange (going for it w/ R compound
tires mounted). Excellent performance with no compromises.
On the street, the stock 996tt pads (sans vinration dampeners or
anti-squeal paste) are dead silent. Dust is totally acceptable.
My understanding is that Pagid Sport Blue pads will be available
shortly, if not already. Also, Porterfiled will cut you up any of their
pad compounds if you provide them with a sample or an outline &
thickness spec.
FWIW, the 996 Gt2 six piston monoblocs are real beauties. Heat shieds on
the pistons and all. Only problem is that they are gigantic (so are the
pads. Conventional two pads per caliper, unlike the 8 piston monoblocs
with their 4 pads per caliper design). I mean TITANIC, they rival the 8
piston jobbies. The 6 pots + pads weigh in at ~13 pounds per! The 380x32
rotors are gorgeous (I hand carried, well back-pack carried, them from
my Porsche factory visit last month). These rotors weigh ~23 pounds
(sans hats). So, all in all, it would have been a heavy-ass kit. Would
have been fun to play with (especially paired with an RS2-esque rear
upgrade using 996 Gt2 rear calipers and 330x28 rotors). Anway, I
abandonded the idea when it became totally obvious that 19s would be
required. I may try the 380s with the 4 piston monoblocs. We'll see.
