Derek,

  Most likely the problem resides in the vacuum motor underneath the rear
seat located next to the battery. This was a common problem amongst '92 100
and S4 models and may have affected some '93 models. I had this exact same
issue which drove me nuts until I just happened to read a letter in the
member correspondence section of an old Quattro Quarterly(hey, I guess it
was good for something) Found a used vacuum servo motor from a '94 100 in a
bone yard and my electrical gremlins then vanished. Strange problem indeed
and I'm almost positive that this is your friends current drain. HTH,
