[s-cars] Oil Smoke on startup

Hi Quinn;

One common cause for the start-up oil smoke puff is a leaking turbo oil
seal. This mists the intake piping with oil which pools overnight, giving a
nice puff when you start up in the morning.
A leaking valve cover gasket will also leak air when you use the most
common method of pressure testing the intake system - you are actually
pressurizing the entire crankcase due to the PCV connection to the turbo
intake.

Hi all,

This is the first time I have posted, although I have enjoyed the list for
2 years.

I have a 93 S4 with 120,000 miles. Recently, the car has begun to puff an
oil based smoke when the car is started after sitting for ~8 hours. The
smoke, which blooms like a big cloud, only lasts for about 15-30 seconds,
then it disappears for good.... The (stock) car pushes 15.5 PSI and vacuum
at idle is 18.

The car has a new bypass valve and when pressure tested, did bleed a little
air at 5psi "somewhere" in the back of the motor (near the firewall). We
couldn't find exactly where, but you can hear a gurgling noise for sure.
There is also some oil stains (not really leaking) on the back of the
engine closer to the passenger side. Also, there is oil in the spark plugs
wells. The number 2 plug was covered in oil up to the tip, the others have
just a little. This means a new valve cover gasket, right?

I am thinking that oil is somehow leaink into the intake/cylinders and what
I see is that oil burning off at startup. Are there any common failures
that I should look for? Where should I look? I mean, it is really
embarressing! What should I do next?

Thank you oh great list, Quinn
