I too was looking into those pricey aftermarket exhaust systems but did
not want to bite off $1000 + for the system.  I am not saying that those
systems are not worth the cost as most of them provide a sweet sound, a
noticeable performance gain, and a lot of eye-candy!  Instead, I went to
a local shop, and they custom built a 3" cat-back pipe, ran it though a
3" MagnaFlow straight flow muffler (see
http://www.magnaflow.com/02wide-open.htm), and added a chrome tip for me
for around $300.  From the cats, they built a 3" Y-pipe, dropped the
stock muffler and resonator (lost a lot of weight that day!), and
replaced them with the Magnaflow.  The performance was noticeable as
soon as I drove out of their garage, and the sound is wonderful, not
that coffee can sound you hear on some of those Asian Import Tuners, but
a subtle, throaty sound that you notice when running up the RPMs.  Add
some testosterone to your Audi!  It looks great from street level but is
not the eye candy solution that you may get from Strommung, Scorpion,
Supersprint, etc. undrerneath.  My next thing is to add some high flow
