Our UrS's are not really sports cars, they are grand touring cars. They are
purpose built to cover great distances in short periods of time under any
weather condition while providing great comfort for up to four occupants.
Compromises are made - they are not going to compete against a true sports
car let alone a race car. While part of me would love to bring my UrS up to
RS2 spec - if for no other reason than to have 9/10ths M5 for 1/4 the cost
:-) the truth is I don't need to. My other car is an 89 MR2 that provides
(during summer months) almost all the things my URS lacks (light weight,
lighting quick responsiveness to all driver inputs, excellent steering and
shifter feel, and sheer toss-ability. It is a bit underpowered (I'd love to
swap in a supercharged motor ) but is so fun to drive it almost doesn't
matter. I haven't driven a formula car or any purpose built track car for
that matter, but I imagine the differences are similar but on another order
of magnitude. While I will continue to tweak my UrS (suspension and 6-speed
completed, brakes and 3-bar chip are next) I try to take an approach that
recognizes the ultimate limitations of the car. If it were my only vehicle
or I had a LOT more disposable income, I might think differently.
