[s-cars] valve cover

Morning listers, etc.-

I've noticed a number of people have removed their valve covers and buffed
the snot out of them, producing a very attractive polished aluminum look.

Can someone who's BTDT advise me as to the best procedure ?  I had a friend
(machinist) look at it, he's worried about removing the anodize.  Once it's
polished, is it then clearcoated with VHT paint?

Curious.
