Rod-
I'm talking about the street versions, not the rally cars. I have
no knowledge of what the rally cars are running, nor the rules
in WRC.

Japanese cars have a "gentleman's agreement" among the
manufacturers and JIS (Japanese DOT) to limit horsepower to
280DIN bhp. This is purely a numbers game- the old Toyota
Supra Turbo was rated at 280 in Japan, while rated at 320 in
both the US and Europe. It's very evident that the R33 and R34
Skyline GT-Rs produced much more than 280hp.

So this is a "hp limit," but in practice, it has been exceeded
already and in some cases, by quite a bit. Officially, I only know
of the Nismo R400 being one of the few Japanese cars that has
hp ratings over 280- the R400 is rated at 400hp.

For WRC, isn't the displacement limit 2L? I don't know if they
have intake restrictors, but all of the cars lately seem to be
2L cars- Focus, Impreza, Evo, etc.

Considering that the stock IC is so small, it's not
surprising that water injection has massive gains on
the UrS. With a Happersize IC, I think the gains would
be much less, but that's purely speculation. Factory
STi and Evo cars have water injection- the Evo VII RS
has a tank in the trunk that is full-width behind the
rear seatback, must hold 25-30L of water.

In my opinion and not specifically knowing these engines, I think they
use water injection becase they are all dyno'ed to a certain max HP and
the teardown specs are recorded so you cant cheat with hardware, you can
only cheat and compete with SW - this can be hidden at post inspection.
Since you cant get more turbo and you are limited on gas, timing is the
answer. Timing causes heat and detonation and water injection is an
effective way to keep rules/hp limited cars competitive. Ever seen one
of these cars run a rally? do you think they are only running 300hp? Now
I could certainly be mistaken about the rules but I think the are
limited by a max hp rule
